Donald Trump Says He Is Not Knowledgeable About Democrat’s Killing
During a briefing earlier this week, the former president responded to an inquiry about the reason he did not direct American flags flown at half-mast to commemorate the Minnesota House Speaker, who was killed with her partner this summer.
The topic came up following Trump’s recent order to lower flags at half-staff in memory of rightwing activist a prominent activist, who was assassinated at a gathering at a Utah college.
When pressed regarding why he and several conservatives continue to point fingers at the left for a surge of political violence, he at first remarked he was "not familiar" with the case.
"I’m not familiar. The who?" Trump responded, leaning in across his desk.
Once the reporter reiterated that the Minnesota official was assassinated as a liberal lawmaker following her murdered this summer, the president stated:
"Oh. Well, if the governor had asked me to do that, I would have done that."
He implied that the Minnesota governor had petitioned the White House, Trump would have complied, though Trump failed to mention Walz by name.
He continued, explaining the administration’s stance:
"It didn’t cross my mind, though I would have acted if requested."
He further noted on how honoring individuals is often an common request, which meaning the administration sometimes has to reject such petitions to avoid constant lowering.
Larger Context
This conversation occurred against the backdrop of an intense political climate regarding political violence across the nation.
Although Trump and other conservatives repeatedly pointed fingers at liberal organizations over instigating attacks, opponents highlight that attacks has victimized officials across all parties, for example:
- Killing of the Minnesota Speaker
- Arson targeting residence belonging to a Democratic governor
- Beating against Nancy Pelosi’s husband
- Prevented plan to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer
Regardless of such incidents, many conservative figures have largely centered almost exclusively on highlighting death of the conservative activist, but giving limited attention toward attacks targeting liberal figures.
The President’s Further Statements
Subsequently, Trump denied that he has faulted merely Democrats regarding partisan strife, but then blame the "extremist liberals" of fueling "significant unrest".
"Extreme liberal elements have brought many difficulties upon the nation," he said. "In my view, they hold contempt for America."
Just before that day, the vice president, a close friend of Kirk’s, appeared on a broadcast remembering the conservative figure during which he spoke about political reconciliation, but then stated that not "shared responsibility", arguing saying liberal leaders remained primarily at fault.
In the episode, the vice president did not make any acknowledgment regarding the Minnesota assassination or other incidents of partisan attacks, for example the insurrection events at the Capitol building.
