The Developer's Challenged Shooter Project Marathon Shows Signs of Life

Marathon, Bungie's highly-anticipated game, has reared its head again with the announcement of a closed technical test set to take place soon.

A Challenging Path to Launch

First announced during the 2023 gaming showcase, Marathon has undergone a bumpy development cycle. In October 2024, the developer stated it was aiming to start Alpha tests during the coming year. A period of silence followed, until the project was showcased again in spring with a planned September release. However, after some playtests led to mixed reactions, Bungie revealed during summer that it was postponing the game's launch.

Avoiding Past Mistakes

Despite the title has already encountered its fair share of controversies, Bungie appears determined to ensure their project doesn't suffer the same outcome as other games. Now, it seems the game's development is moving forward again, as Bungie just disclosed that it has conducted multiple private tests to gather feedback on the game" since this past summer. The developer is opening the doors a bit wider, enabling additional participants to get an early look of the experience via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

  • Own a PS5, Xbox Series X or S, or Windows PC (system requirements include an compatible CPU, supported graphics card, and 8GB RAM)

PC users can also register via Steam starting on October 13th, with Steam applications due by October 26th. Bungie will notify players who qualify and provide details of the next steps.

"This is an important checkpoint for us as we evaluate enhancements since the game's Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, proximity communication, re-tuned combat pacing, individual matchmaking, deeper environmental storytelling, and more," the studio said. "That said, the current version is a development build and will only include a portion of what's intended for the game's full release, focused on the initial gameplay moments."

Additional Information

Additional details about the technical test and the game itself can be found on Marathon's help page. But for individuals who don't qualify for the trial (or cannot participate), there's still good news: Bungie says a official announcement on the state of the game is the next thing on the schedule once the test is over.

"We'll be sharing a public update on the game's progress in the coming months after the private testing phase!" Bungie announced.
