The UN Security Council voted in favour to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the following week.

He was appointed transitional president subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that drove out the previous leader in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close 13 years of domestic strife.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and to friendly nations for assisting of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week comes after American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot to unify the country".

The pair met on their first occasion during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the region.

Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.

Previous US Visit

The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to America in the current year. In September, he made history as the initial Syrian president to address the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
