Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
An important representative stated the attack made him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
